Beyond the Branch
For retail branch managers

All the responsibility of ownership. None of the benefits.

You hire. You train. You babysit pipelines at nine at night. You hit the number. Then corporate hands you a plaque and a trip and calls it culture. I ran a retail branch. I know exactly how that plaque gets paid for.

The branch manager ledger

What you carry vs. what you own.

What you carry

  • Hiring loan officers, and keeping them
  • Training the rookies, then watching them get poached
  • The branch P&L and the pressure that comes with it
  • Compliance fire drills and every escalation
  • Nights, weekends, and the number corporate set for you
  • Your own production on top of all of it

What you own

  • The company
  • The brand on the door
  • The margin on your branch's loans
  • A say when the comp plan changes
  • A trophy
  • A President's Club photo
President's Club

The trip is nice. Who paid for it?

President's Club is a great week. Sun, a stage, your name called, a nice dinner. I'm not saying don't enjoy the beach.

Now do the math backwards. Every trophy, every award night, every "exciting comp plan update" is funded by margin on loans you and your team closed. Culture is great. Just ask yourself what the culture is costing you.

Here's the part that gets me: you're already running a business. You build a team, you develop people, you manage a P&L. You're doing the owner's job on a manager's paycheck.

Retail: we have exciting news about your comp plan. It's never exciting.
Franchise player. Rookie contract.
If your branch manager talks about selling value more than pricing, ask who that value is for.

On the other side of the table

What changes when it's yours.

Your name on the door.Your brand, your website, your reputation.
Your margin, in plain sight. You see every BPS on every loan.
Your pricing decisions.Shop the file instead of explaining the rate sheet.
Your people stay because of you.Not because of a logo or a non-answer about comp.
Your time back.No layers of middle management to report up to.
Your call on the schedule.Build the business around your life, not the reverse.
